The redevelopment of Barge House in Southwark is the latest project in the upgrading of London’s Southbank. Recent projects at Sea Containers House have improved the area and Barge House is a striking building which will continue this regeneration and uplift of the area. The current building was constructed in the 1980s and its layout and design has rendered it unsuitable for current office market demands, and the decision was taken to demolish the superstructure whilst retaining and reusing much of the current substructure of the existing building.

The new building is a highly designed and environmentally friendly construction, which will provide up to date, flexible and sustainable office space in a unique waterside environment.

The finishes, both internally and externally, have been designed to produce a unique building including pre-cast and terracotta elements, along with exposed timber and concrete features and high specification office finishes.

Works to the structure involve: the strip out and demolition of the existing 3-4 storey office building down to ground floor slab; new steelwork frame and composite metal decking upper floors with two reinforced concrete cores; new Terracotta and coloured metal cladding, double glazed aluminium windows, opening natural ventilation louvres and a bio-solar roof.

The building will be finished with state of the art facilities including reception, loading bay, cycle storage, changing facilities, refuse store, an existing retained UKPN substation and affordable office to the majority of the ground floor.  The remainder of the ground floor and all upper floors will be finished to Cat A office standard, serviced by lift installations, electrical installations, a comfort cooling system and LED lighting.
